What is cellulite?

Under the outer layer of our skin (subcutaneous tissue) and around our organs there is a type of cells called fat cells that are extremely useful for the proper functioning of our body. They have the ability to protect bones and organs thanks to their elasticity and provide thermal insulation, necessary for our survival at low temperatures. Their main characteristic is also the ability to store energy in the form of fat while they play an important role in the production of hormones (leptin, interleukins, etc.).

When the intake of calories is greater than what we consume, then the body stores the extra calories in the form of fat in the fat cells so that not only energy reserves are created but also our vessels are protected from its accumulation, which would create very serious health problems. This deposition of fat in the cells of the subcutaneous tissue (under the skin) is what we call cellulite.

Another factor that leads to an increase in the size of fat cells is insufficient circulation. When a sufficient amount of blood, i.e. nutrients, does not reach the cells of the subcutaneous tissue, then the body sends fat to nourish them, which in turn is stored in the fat cells. These therefore increase in volume and worsen the problem of poor blood circulation, further compressing the vessels.

Therefore the problem is not the presence of fat cells but the extra intake of calories and the lack of physical exercise which ensures both calorie burning and good blood circulation.

What role can herbs play?

Herbs can be very helpful in combination with proper diet and exercise.

There are herbs that affect the metabolism by removing toxins from the body (diuretics, bitter tonics) and strengthening the lymphatic system ("cleansers"), that promote circulation (circulatory tonics) and that help firming (cell cohesion- astringents).

What the gel does and what it contains:

Grapefruit helps remove toxins from the body helping to effectively reduce cellulite and its further development

Juniper acts against fluid retention promoting detoxification

Rosemary causes dilatation of the vessels and promote blood circulation in the area

Coffee Oil promotes fat metabolism

Lemon has astringent action and stimulates lymphatic drainage

Fennel has a strong diuretic action and helps accelerate the removal of metabolism’s waste products while helping to break down the fat that accumulates in the subcutaneous tissue

Black pepper stimulates circulation and helps remove toxins from the body

Grape seed oil is rich in antioxidants with astringent action that helps tissue tightening.

Sea buckthorn extract promotes skin elasticity & stimulates skin regeneration.

Centella Asiatica Extract

Also known as Gotu Kola, is a south Asian therapeutic herb that has been used for hundreds of years in traditional Asian medicine. It is recommended particularly for dermatological disorders.

Its actions are:

- Strengthens the Connective Tissues: Having weak connective tissues is one of the causes of cellulite.

- It can help to strengthen these tissues, as they are mostly made up of a protein called collagen. It boosts the production of collagen which consequently makes the connective tissues stronger. Strong connective tissues hold the fat in place and help to prevent the appearance of nodules.

- Improves Blood Circulation: Another cause of cellulite is poor blood circulation. As women age, the level of estrogen they produce begin to drop, and this hormone is important for blood circulation among other things. Centella asiatica helps to improve blood flow, as well as maintain and strengthen blood vessels.

- Reduces Inflammation: It has also been proven to lower inflammations in the body. This plant contains properties that help to reduce inflammations. Reducing inflammations in the body is important in managing cellulite because it has been observed that cellulite is aggravated by inflammation.

- Reduces Swelling: It fosters proper lymphatic nodes drainage. Improving lymphatic nodes drainage helps the lymphatic system to flush out useless fluids, and remove swellings which are most often found in very severe cellulite.

Spirulina Platensis Organic

It provides a rich source of nutrients, including protein, complex carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins A, E K, beta-carotene and B-complex.

In addition, spirulina contains a variety of beauty (and health) benefiting minerals and free fatty acids, such as iron, manganese, zinc, sodium, potassium, magnesium, copper and gamma-linolenic acid. On top of all that, spirulina can be a great source of antioxidants and has the ability to detox the body thanks to its chlorophyll and carotenes.

It also has detoxifying properties that can be put to good use in skin care. Chlorophyll provides strong chelating properties. It attracts and removes heavy metals from the body before they reach and get stored in skin tissue.

It can firm the look of sagging skin. With a good amino acid profile, including chief constituents for skin collagen—glycine and proline—and mineral copper, spirulina is a great option to support skin collagen production.
